Technical Specialist for various Science Departments
Eastern Connecticut State University is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the Technical Specialist position. Eastern is Connecticut’s Public Liberal Arts University and is located in Willimantic, Connecticut which is 1.5 hours from Boston and 2.5 hours from New York City. Eastern is one of four universities in the Connecticut State College and University System (CSCU). The position also offers substantial health and retirement benefits.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Science Technical. Specialist is responsible for maintaining the laboratory and support
facilities for the designated science departments. Broad duties include prepare laboratories for
instruction; maintain an appropriate inventory of lab supplies, reagents, media, instrumentation,
and equipment; manage the chemical database; oversee the use and disposal ofbio/hazardous
materials; help ensure compliance with relevant health and safety lab protocols; and assist in the
hiring and supervision of student lab workers. More specialized responsibilities are delineated
below:
1. Maintain the chemical database for all stored chemicals to ensure the University is in
compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
2. Serve as liaison with the Environmental Health and Safety Officer to insure proper
record-keeping, delivery, storage, use, and disposal of hazardous and biohazardous materials.
3. Provide administrative oversight of the Vivarium, including animal care.
4. Prepare all reagents and media requiring aseptic/sterile techniques for laboratories in
microbiology, virology, biotechnology, developmental biology, and similar courses.
5. Perform required maintenance checks for autoclave sterility and proper function. Perform
routine maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment such as microscopes,
micropipettes, spectrophotometers, and similar instrumentation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years administrative experience in a science field. Bachelor's degree in a science field such
as biology, earth science, or physical science, with expertise in related laboratory techniques.
Master's degree in a relevant science field preferred, with prior supervisory experience.
Proficiency in database management, mechanical aptitude, ability to work independently, and strong
"Interpersonal and communication skills are required. These qualifications may be waived for
individuals with appropriate alternate experience.

Compensation and Employee Benefits
The Technical Specialist for the Science Departments is compensated at the Administrative 3, salary level in accordance with the State University Organization of Administrative Faculty (SUOAF).
