Eastern Connecticut State University is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the Presidential Assistant position. Eastern is Connecticut’s Public Liberal Arts University and is located in Willimantic, Connecticut which is 1.5 hours from Boston and 2 hours from New York City.  Eastern is one of four universities in the Connecticut State College and University System (CSCU). The position also offers substantial health and retirement benefits.
Job Summary:
Reports to the President and performs a range of administrative work in close support of the policy direction of the University, both internally and with the University's public constituencies. The position is expected to facilitate the operation of the President's office to accommodate the conflicting demands on the President's time and effectiveness. This includes assisting the President in integrating the efforts of the University's Cabinet and other senior managers as well as helping to foster successful relations with the external community including key government officials, community leaders and parents.

Supervision Exercised:
This position may supervise Support Staff.

Essential Duties:
  1. Administers the President's office. This includes such tasks as selecting, training and directing the work of the office’s support staff; assuring the quality of work of the support staff; reviewing all incoming material for the President and making decisions about what requires the President's action. 
  2. Serves as the President's primary strategic liaison with university faculty, staff, student governance groups, and the community at large; coordinates communication between the President and other senior officers of the University. 
  3. Gathers, investigates, researches, analyzes, and/or studies information affecting University-wide, intradepartmental, or interdepartmental operations.
  4. Coordinates special projects on behalf of the President, frequently involving senior officers of the University.
  5. Assists administration in various cost analyses, projections, reports, and fundraising efforts.
  6. Prepares correspondence and reports, assists in the preparation of special confidential reports for presentation to the Chancellor for the Board of Regents and other committees.
  7. Responds to routine inquiries as delegated by the President.
  8. Serves as the President’s designee at meetings and committees, when requested.
  9. Assists the President in speech writing and the preparation of other communications.
  10. Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basis level of responsibility of the position.
Qualifications:
Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.) Incumbents are required to have demonstrated advanced knowledge and abilities in the following:
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Three years’ experience with a broad understanding of postsecondary operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and operate a complex and confidential office.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Knowledge of the goals, objectives, structure and operations of a public University.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit correspondence and other written materials.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with senior stakeholders from government, business, education, and the community.
  • Basic understanding of public relations and fund-raising concepts.
Work Environment:
Incumbents typically perform their work in offices.  The work involves extensive use of personal computers, but does not, normally, involve any significant physical effort.  Reasonable accommodation will be made for incumbents and candidates with physical limitations.
